I went to Taman Safari today. It took about an hour and a half to get there by car. Unfortunately, the afternoon rain fell earlier than usual.

As we neared the safari, there must have been at least 50 sales people along the road selling carrots and miniature bananas to feed to the animals. It is amazing how neatly stacked the carrots are — we wondered where they are from.

We bought about four bunches of carrots and a lot of bananas. It was incredible how the animals came up to the car or just stood by the side of the road waiting to be fed.

Bogor’s 19th century botanical gardens are truly impressive. I wandered there for a few hours this morning getting oriented and enjoying the plant life. The heat made it impossible to continue beyond that.

Apparently, the massive gardens contain more than 15,000 species of trees and plants. The gardens are in the centre of Bogor. One side is flanked by a busy four-lane road, another by a busy market with people selling rabbits, fruit and vegetables, and another by the presidential palace.

I was the object of interest for local people who wanted to have their picture taken with me. Young women also wanted to video and interview me for their English practice.

I complied with some of them, but was relieved to finally find a part of the gardens where there were no other people around.
